The American Dragon Returns

The former AEW World Champion competed for the first time in nearly two years, joining the Death Riders in an emotional main event dedicated to the memory of PAC.

Bryan Danielson made an unexpected return to the ring Wednesday night, competing in the main event of AEW Dynamite during a special episode dedicated to the life and memory of PAC.

Danielson had not wrestled since AEW WrestleDream on October 12, 2024, when Jon Moxley defeated him for the AEW World Championship and brought Danielson’s full-time in-ring career to an end. Nearly two years later, “The American Dragon” stepped back between the ropes under dramatically different circumstances.

Wednesday’s Dynamite from the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh was presented by AEW as a tribute to Benjamin Satterley, better known to wrestling fans as PAC, who died Sunday at age 40. The program featured remembrances from throughout the AEW roster, a ten-bell salute and multiple in-ring tributes to the longtime AEW star.

Danielson first appeared earlier in the broadcast following Jon Moxley’s successful AEW Continental Championship defense against Orange Cassidy. An emotional Danielson entered the ring and embraced Moxley, his former Blackpool Combat Club teammate and the man who defeated him in his previous match nearly two years earlier.

The greater surprise came later in the evening.

The scheduled main event featured the Death Riders against the Don Callis Family in a ten-man tag team match. Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, Daniel Garcia and Gabe Kidd initially approached the ring representing the Death Riders, while Moxley remained at the commentary desk.

With the Death Riders apparently one competitor short, Danielson’s entrance music hit.

Danielson emerged as the fifth member of the team, officially marking his return to active competition. He joined Castagnoli, Yuta, Garcia and Kidd against Josh Alexander, Lance Archer, Mark Davis, Jake Doyle and the returning Wardlow.

Danielson became physically involved late in the match and showed flashes of the offense that defined his career, including his signature kicks, submission work and Busaiku Knee. The Death Riders ultimately won the match, with Daniel Garcia scoring the deciding fall over Doyle. Wrestling Inc.

Following the match, Danielson and the Death Riders remained together in the ring as the evening returned its focus to PAC. A tribute video celebrating PAC’s career played before the broadcast showed the group gathered around the empty chair associated with their fallen teammate.

Danielson’s appearance carries particular significance because of how his previous match ended. At WrestleDream 2024, Moxley defeated Danielson by referee stoppage to win the AEW World Championship. AEW described that defeat at the time as the conclusion of Danielson’s full-time career rather than necessarily the final match of his life.

Wednesday night ultimately provided the answer to whether fans would ever see Danielson wrestle again.

For one night, on an episode centered on remembering one of AEW’s most respected performers, the American Dragon returned.
